What Nonstop Running Actually Means

A heat pump pulls heat out of outdoor air, so the colder it gets outside, the less heat there is to move. On a cold morning your system may run for very long stretches and that is by design. What matters is whether the house is holding its setpoint. If the thermostat says 68 and the rooms feel like 68, long cycles are just the system doing its job. If the temperature is drifting down, or the auxiliary heat light stays on all day, something is short on capacity. Same story if the outdoor unit is buried in ice or the indoor air feels cool at the vents.

Cause Family One: Airflow And Settings

This is where we start because it is the cheapest and most common. A loaded filter chokes the blower and the system runs forever chasing a setpoint it cannot reach. Closed or blocked supply vents do the same thing room by room. Thermostats matter too. A unit set to emergency heat will run on strip heat only and feel weak. A programmable schedule that jumps the setpoint six degrees at once will run for hours catching up. Dead thermostat batteries can leave the call for heat stuck on. All of this is homeowner territory and worth checking before you call anyone.

Cause Family Two: Defrost, Refrigerant, And The Outdoor Unit

In cold weather a heat pump ices up on purpose and then runs a defrost cycle to shed it. If the defrost board, sensor or reversing valve fails, the coil stays packed with ice and the system runs nonstop moving almost no heat. Low refrigerant charge from a leak has the same look: constant running, lukewarm air, sometimes frost in odd places. Neither of these is a homeowner repair. Refrigerant work is closed-system, high-pressure work and the reversing valve sits behind line voltage. What you can do is clear leaves, weeds and drifted snow away from the cabinet so it can breathe.

Cause Family Three: Sizing, Duct Loss, And Envelope

Sometimes the equipment is fine and the house is the problem. Ducts running through an unconditioned attic or crawlspace bleed heat before it reaches the rooms, so the system runs constantly to make up the difference. Leaky returns pull in cold air. A system that was undersized at install, or a house that has since added square footage, will never catch up on the coldest days. We look for this pattern when a unit is relatively new, well maintained, and still cannot hold temperature. The fix is usually duct sealing or added return capacity rather than new equipment, and we will tell you which.
