Dual-Fuel System Repair

We repair dual-fuel systems, the pairing of a heat pump with a gas furnace, for homeowners across California and Nevada. You need this call when the heat pump runs but never hands off to the furnace on a cold morning, when the furnace fires on mild days it should not, or when the outdoor unit short cycles in heating. The usual causes are a failed outdoor temperature sensor, a miswired or mismatched thermostat, a bad reversing valve, or a control board that lost its changeover logic. Call us and describe what the thermostat is showing.

What a dual-fuel repair actually involves

A dual-fuel system has two heat sources and one brain deciding which runs. Most of our work is in that decision. We confirm the thermostat is a true dual-fuel model and wired for it, then read the balance point setting and the outdoor sensor it depends on. From there we test the heat pump in heating mode, watch the changeover to gas, and verify the furnace fires and proves. If the fault is mechanical, we move to refrigerant charge, the reversing valve, and the defrost board.

What we check on site

We start with the simple things because they are often the answer: thermostat settings and batteries, breakers at the panel and the disconnect, filter condition, and airflow through the returns and registers. Then we go deeper. Outdoor coils in this region load up with ag dust and cottonwood, and a choked condenser will make a heat pump look like it failed. We check the outdoor sensor reading against actual temperature, control board staging, auxiliary heat lockout, and whether the furnace and heat pump are being told to run together.

How we decide repair is the right call

We look at what failed, what else is aging, and how the two halves match. A thermostat, a sensor, a contactor, or a defrost board is straightforward repair work and we do it the same visit when parts are on the truck. A failed compressor in an old heat pump paired with a furnace near the end of its service life is a different conversation, and we will show you what we measured before recommending replacement. You get the reading, the cause, and the options in plain language.

Dual-Fuel System Repair — quick answers

Why does my furnace run when the heat pump should handle the temperature?

Usually the balance point is set too high, or the outdoor temperature sensor is reading wrong and telling the control to lock out the heat pump. Both are testable, and both are common on systems installed without setup.

Can I run just the furnace until you get here?

Often yes. Many dual-fuel thermostats have an emergency or auxiliary heat setting that runs the furnace alone. If you smell gas at any point, leave the house, call 911 or your gas utility, then call us.

Does a dual-fuel system need two separate repairs?

Not usually. One visit covers both halves because they share a thermostat and control wiring. We diagnose the changeover first, since a single sensor or board fault can make either unit look broken.

How it works

  1. Step 1

    Tell us the symptom

Call or fill in the quote form. We ask what changed, when it started, and what the thermostat reads. That tells us whether to bring parts for a cooling fault or a heating fault.

  2. Step 2

    We diagnose on site

A technician checks the thermostat, the electrical side, airflow through the filter and coil, refrigerant pressures, and the outdoor unit. You get told what failed and why, in plain words, before anything is replaced.

  3. Step 3

    Repair and verify

We make the repair, then run the system and measure the results at the vents. If a part needs ordering, we say so and give you a realistic window instead of a vague promise.

Why homeowners call us

  • Built for real valley heatWe work in areas where afternoons sit above 110 degrees and systems run for months without a break. That shapes how we size repairs, check capacitors and contactors, and judge whether a compressor is genuinely done.
  • Attic and package unitsPlenty of homes across the region run attic air handlers or rooftop package units instead of a garage furnace and a side-yard condenser. We are used to the access, the duct runs, and the drain issues those setups bring.
  • Dust and debris we expectAg dust, cottonwood fluff and grass clippings pack condenser coils and starve a system of airflow. We clean what we find and show you the difference, rather than adding refrigerant to a unit that just could not breathe.
  • Heating too, not only ACFurnace repair, heat pump faults and no-heat calls get the same attention as summer work. Ignition problems, cracked or failing components and short cycling all get diagnosed before we recommend anything larger.
  • All major brands, gas & electricFrom Carrier and Trane to Lennox, Goodman, Rheem and Bryant, serviced independently.
  • Straight answersWhen a replacement beats a repair, we tell you, sometimes before we roll a truck.
