What a defrost cycle repair involves
A heat pump pulls heat from outdoor air, and that makes the outdoor coil run cold enough to collect frost. The defrost cycle reverses the system briefly to melt it off. When that cycle misfires, ice builds until airflow chokes and heating output drops. We start by watching the system through a full cycle, confirm whether it is calling for defrost at all, then trace the fault back to the control, the sensor, or the reversing valve. We inspect the defrost control board, the coil temperature sensor or thermostat, the reversing valve and its solenoid, and the outdoor fan that should stop during defrost. We look at the coil for airflow blockage from dust, cottonwood fluff, and yard debris, since a smothered coil frosts faster than the cycle can keep up with. We also verify wiring and low voltage connections. Repairs range from replacing a failed sensor to swapping a control board or freeing a stuck valve.

Is frost on my heat pump always a problem?
No. A thin layer of frost in cold, humid weather is normal, and the defrost cycle should melt it within minutes. Thick ice that stays put through several cycles is the sign something needs a look.
Can I chip the ice off myself?
Please do not. Coil fins and refrigerant tubing bend and puncture easily, which turns a sensor repair into a much larger one. You can clear leaves and debris from around the cabinet, then call us.
Why does my heat pump blow cool air during winter?
Short bursts of cool air are normal while the system runs a defrost cycle. Steady cool air with ice on the outdoor unit usually means the cycle is stuck or a control has failed.
