What Warm Air From a Running System Actually Tells Us
If the indoor blower is moving air but that air is not cold, the cooling side of the system has stopped doing its job while the fan side keeps going. That narrows things down quickly. Either the outdoor unit is not running, or it is running but cannot move heat out of your home, or air is not moving across the indoor coil the way it needs to. Walk outside and listen. If the condenser is silent while the thermostat is calling for cooling, that points one direction. If it is humming along and the vents are still warm, that points another. Both are fixable, and the answer changes what we bring to the truck.
Cause Family One: Thermostat, Settings and Power
This is the cheapest thing on the list and it happens more than people expect. A thermostat switched to FAN instead of COOL will blow air all day without any cooling. Dead batteries in a battery-powered thermostat can leave the display working while the cooling signal drops out. A programmable schedule someone set months ago may be holding a higher setpoint in the afternoon. Then there is power. Many homes have a separate breaker for the outdoor unit, and if that one is tripped the indoor blower still runs on its own circuit. That is exactly the situation where the fan works and nothing gets cold.
Cause Family Two: Airflow and a Dirty Outdoor Unit
Cooling depends on air moving freely in two places. Inside, a clogged filter starves the coil, and a starved coil can ice over until it stops absorbing heat entirely. Outside, the condenser has to dump that heat into already hot air, and it cannot do it through a mat of ag dust, cottonwood fluff or grass clippings packed into the fins. We see this every summer across the region. If your filter has not been changed in months and the outdoor coil looks fuzzy or gray instead of clean metal, you have found a real contributor. Restricted airflow also makes every other problem on the system worse.
Cause Family Three: Refrigerant Loss and Failed Components
When settings, power and airflow all check out, we are into work that needs tools and training. Low refrigerant means a leak somewhere, because refrigerant does not get consumed. Finding and repairing that leak is the job, and simply adding more without fixing the cause wastes your money. Beyond that, a failed capacitor can leave the compressor humming but not starting, a bad contactor can keep the outdoor unit from energizing, and a worn compressor or seized condenser fan motor produces the same warm-air symptom. These are refrigerant and high-voltage repairs. We do not walk homeowners through them over the phone, and we would not want you opening that cabinet.
What You Can Safely Check, and What We Do Differently
Before you call, four things are fair game. Confirm the thermostat is set to COOL with a setpoint below room temperature and swap the batteries if it takes them. Check your electrical panel for a tripped breaker and reset it once. Replace the air filter if it is dirty. Clear weeds, leaves and cottonwood from around the outdoor unit and make sure supply vents inside are open. Stop there. On our end we take pressure and temperature readings across the system, measure amp draw on the motors, test the capacitor under load, and inspect the coil and metering device. That tells us whether you need a part, a leak repair or a bigger conversation about the system.

Why is my AC running constantly but the house is not cooling?
The blower is working while the cooling side is not. Common reasons are a tripped breaker on the outdoor unit, a frozen indoor coil from a clogged filter, a failed capacitor, or low refrigerant from a leak that needs repair.
Should I turn the system off while I wait for a technician?
Yes, switch it off at the thermostat. Running a system that cannot cool can worsen compressor damage, and if the indoor coil has iced up, turning it off with the fan on helps it thaw before we arrive.
Can I just add refrigerant myself to fix warm air?
No. Refrigerant is under pressure, requires gauges to charge correctly, and running low always means a leak. Adding more without repairing the leak just loses it again. This is work for a technician with proper equipment.
