What Short Cycling Actually Means
Short cycling means the furnace is reaching a shutdown condition before it finishes a normal heat cycle. Usually that shutdown is a safety device doing its job. The furnace is getting too hot inside the heat exchanger area, or it is not proving flame properly, or the thermostat is telling it to stop early. None of those are the same repair, which is why guessing gets expensive. The important part for you is that it is not normal wear you should live with. Repeated ignition and overheating cycles are hard on the heat exchanger and the ignition components, so the longer it runs this way, the bigger the eventual furnace repair.
Airflow Problems, The Cheapest Cause First
Most short cycling calls we run come down to restricted airflow. A loaded filter, closed or blocked vents, a crushed flex duct in the attic, or a dirty blower wheel all starve the furnace of the air it needs to carry heat away. Heat builds in the cabinet, the high limit switch opens, and the burners shut off. The blower keeps running to cool things down, then the cycle repeats. Homes in dusty parts of the region load filters fast, especially near open ground or fields. If you have not changed the filter in a couple of months, change it and watch the furnace for a day before you spend money on anything else.
Thermostat And Sizing Issues
A thermostat in the wrong spot will short cycle a perfectly healthy furnace. If it sits in direct sun, above a supply register, or on an exterior wall, it warms up faster than the rest of the house and satisfies early. Loose wiring at the thermostat or a failing thermostat can do the same. Weak batteries cause odd on and off behavior too. Sizing matters as well. A furnace with more BTU output than the house needs will slam the thermostat setpoint in minutes and shut down, over and over. That one is not a quick fix, but it is worth knowing if the pattern has existed since the system was installed.
Flame Sensing, Ignition And Venting
If the furnace lights, runs about five to ten seconds, then drops out and tries again, that is usually flame sensing rather than airflow. A coated flame sensor stops proving the flame, so the control board closes the gas valve and retries, often three times before locking out. Blocked or disconnected venting, a failing pressure switch, or a weak inducer motor produce similar stop and start behavior. These involve gas and line voltage, so we handle them. If you ever smell gas, leave the building, call 911 or your gas utility from outside, then call us. Same with any carbon monoxide alarm. Get everyone out first.
What You Can Check, And What We Do Differently
Safe homeowner checks: replace the filter, confirm the thermostat is set to heat with fresh batteries, check the breaker for a trip, and walk the house to make sure supply and return vents are open and not blocked by furniture. That is the list. Everything past it needs gauges and meters. When we arrive for the air conditioning repair or heating repair, we watch a full cycle with a manometer on the gas pressure, measure temperature rise across the heat exchanger, read the control board fault history, test the limit and pressure switches, and check static pressure to prove whether the duct system can move the air the furnace needs.

Is it safe to keep using the furnace while it short cycles?
For a night or two, usually, as long as there is no gas smell and no carbon monoxide alarm. But repeated overheating stresses the heat exchanger. Get it looked at rather than running it that way all winter.
Why does the blower keep running after the burners shut off?
That is normal and protective. The blower pulls leftover heat out of the cabinet after the burners stop. If the blower runs a long time with no heat at all, a limit switch likely tripped.
Could a dirty filter really cause this?
Yes, and it is the most common cause we find. A restricted filter chokes airflow, heat builds in the furnace, and the high limit shuts the burners off early. Change it and watch one full day.
