What the off-season does to a heating system
Across California and Nevada, a furnace or heat pump can sit idle for six or seven months while the cooling side works overtime. Dust settles on the burners and the heat exchanger. Attic and closet units collect the same fine ag dust and cottonwood fluff that clogs outdoor coils. Rodents chew wire insulation and build nests in ductwork. Flame sensors oxidize. Condensate lines dry out and crack. On heat pumps, the reversing valve has not moved since spring and sometimes sticks. None of that shows up until you ask for heat, which is why the first cold snap fills our schedule.
Which failures spike, and when
The first genuinely cold week of the season brings a wave of no-heat calls, and most fall into a few buckets. Dirty flame sensors and bad ignitors top the list, because a furnace tries to light, fails, and locks out. Next come blower motors and capacitors that were already weak from a long cooling season. In higher-desert areas we see more cracked heat exchangers and draft issues where systems run long hours. Mid-winter, thermostats and control boards act up. Late season, we find failed limit switches on units that ran restricted all winter behind a clogged filter.
Safe checks you can do yourself
Start with the filter. If you cannot remember changing it, change it now, and make sure it is seated with the airflow arrow pointing toward the unit. Check the thermostat: fresh batteries, set to Heat, fan on Auto, and the setpoint a few degrees above room temperature. Look at your panel for a tripped breaker. Walk the house and confirm supply and return vents are open and not blocked by furniture or rugs. If you have a heat pump, clear leaves, weeds and debris a couple of feet back from the outdoor unit. That is the whole safe list.
Stop and call if you notice any of these
If you smell gas, or a rotten-egg odor near the unit, leave the building first. Get everyone outside, then call 911 or your gas utility from outside, and call us after. Same for a carbon monoxide alarm: outside first, then the call. Do not go back in to check anything. Beyond that, call us before running the system if you see soot around the burner area, rusty streaks on the flue, water pooling at the base, a yellow or lazy flame instead of blue, or if the unit lights and shuts off repeatedly. Burners, gas valves, refrigerant and high-voltage parts are ours to handle.
What a pre-season visit actually covers
We pull the panels and look at the parts that fail. On a gas furnace that means inspecting the heat exchanger, cleaning burners and the flame sensor, checking the ignitor, testing safety limits and the draft, and confirming gas pressure. On a heat pump we test the reversing valve, defrost cycle, and auxiliary heat strips. Either way we check the blower wheel and motor, tighten electrical connections, read amp draw, verify the thermostat is calling correctly, and look at return air and duct condition. You get a straight rundown of what is worn and what can wait. Booking before the first cold week means you are not waiting in line.

Why does my heater smell like burning the first time I run it?
Usually dust burning off the heat exchanger and burners after months of no use. It should clear in fifteen or twenty minutes. If it smells sharp, electrical, or like gas, shut it off and call us.
When should I schedule a heating check?
Early fall, before the first real cold stretch. Systems that sat idle all summer show their problems on startup, and scheduling ahead of the rush means you are not without heat while you wait.
My furnace turns on then shuts off after a minute. What is that?
That pattern usually points to a dirty flame sensor, a restricted filter tripping a limit switch, or a draft problem. Change the filter first. If it keeps cycling, stop running it and call us.
